These two volumes of Cello Sonatas by Jean Baptiste are the only recordings of these sonatas by this relatively unknown composer and violoncellist. Very little is known of the early history of cello playing. The Masse sonatas are some of the first virtuoso pieces written for cello and continuo. They illustrate the beginning of the use of the solo cello in France, forming an important link to the later music of Corette, Breval. Duport, Boccherini and ultimately the French School of cello pedagogy.
