These two volumes of Cello Sonatas by Jean Baptiste are the only recordings of these sonatas by this relatively unknown composer and violoncellist. Very little is known of the early history of cello playing. The Masse sonatas are some of the first virtuoso pieces written for cello and continuo. They illustrate the beginning of the use of the solo cello in France, forming an important link to the later music of Corette, Breval. Duport, Boccherini and ultimately the French School of cello pedagogy.
“…cellists Douglas McNmaes and Vivan Barton, performing on early 18th-century instruments, offer playing that has an excellent unaminty of ensemble and impeccable intonation. Completed by Harpsichordist and directror Karen Flint, this Delaware-based early music ensemble give vivid and expressive renditions of these works, tackling the virtuoso challenges of the faster movements with a winning combination of enthusiasm and élan.”
